How Africans Are Inquiring
altThere are two categories of training for TEN3’s 2010 Curriculum for Africa workshops this summer in Nigeria: curriculum and administrative operations. Church involvement and activities, spiritual life, professional information, and references are the four main sections listed on the curriculum workshop inquiry form. Still, this first step for applicants interested in attending is more than just a form. “We want to work with the writers not just as professionals in a program, but as brothers and sisters in Christ with a vision,” shares JennyBeth Alford, the technical writing editor for TEN3.

TEN3 is using the Nehemiah method of breaking down a vision into many small pieces. The inquiry form is a piece that is naturally attached to many angles of one of TEN3’s core values: relationship building.

Building upon and nurturing our relational history, dozens of trusted African leaders were contacted by TEN3 and asked to get involved. They were asked to keep a pulse on those whom they thought might be interested in rising to the challenge of blazing the path of transformational education in their respective communities. Each prospect then responded to TEN3 by submitting an inquiry form, earmarking the beginning of new relationships.

Inquires are coming from community leaders in as many as four African countries. Current occupations of some of the applicants include pastor, librarian, computer forensic consultant, and professors. Ministry experiences include Couples Fellowship (marriage and parenting ministry), Home Care (a ministry that stays in touch with church members on a regular basis to shepherd them), and Community Outreach (food, clothing, engineering to poor, rural families). Spiritual testimonies of these leaders range from being raised in a Christian home, being introduced to Christ at University, and hearing the word preached while visiting family members and responding to an alter call.

After inquiry forms are received and it is understood that email access is required, each applicant receives an overview of the process:
·      The TEN3 writers guide document is emailed to each applicant, and each are given an opportunity to choose a topic about which they are asked to write.
·      Each applicant returns to TEN3 their writing sample.
·      Selected applicants will then work with TEN3 this summer at the 2010 Curriculum for Africa workshops in Nigeria to refine their submitted writing samples. Other opportunities will be to review the TEN3 writers guide in community to be sure it is understood, consider what impacts the skill of writing, practice writing exercises and review, design a plan to develop material over the course of one year, discuss coming back to another workshop in the summer of 2011, Lord willing. One of the unique factors of TEN3 is the integrated spiritual component. Those who are accepted to the 2010 Curriculum for Africa workshops will also be asked to commit themselves to a development process studying a number of selected books, over the next year, including Thomas A. Kemis’ Imitation of Christ, and Dallas Willard’s Renovation of the Heart. Other next steps before the 2011 workshop training is to follow the writing schedule made at the 2010 workshops, which will be the foundation for the new schools. An e-colleague will be available, Lord willing, to those who finish the workshops this summer who can help obtain resources for the course development. Trained editors will also be available to work closely with the new curriculum writers.

And, finally, over the next year, those who attend this year’s curriculum writer’s workshops will keep a pulse on who in their respective communities might be interested in returning an inquiry form to TEN3 for next summer’s workshops. If you think about it, the inquiry form is knitting together African leaders, new applicants, and TEN3 staff and volunteers—a beautiful view from God’s eyes.

“Desperation. That’s what motivated our weekly prayer time for our TEN3 staff,” shares George Cail, chief operations officer. “We are very aware of how dependent we are on God and the prayers of His people. Therefore, we welcome the inaugural TEN3 Moment."

The leadership of TEN3 is also very aware of the commitment many advocates and volunteers have to pray for the ministry. TEN3 Moment, a brief newsletter sent every other week, will help uphold this commitment by offering current prayer needs while also staying connected to the prayers of TEN3 staff.
